Caring for the wildlife

Now that winter is slowly creeping up on us, many of us forget to look after the wildlife we see in our garden.

Food

Did you know that in winter, because of the lack of daytime hours, searching for food becomes so much harder for birds? Well here is a variety of foods we can feed our friends:

  • Sunflower seeds

  • Nyjer seeds

  • Fruits such as apples, plums and pears

  • Bread crumbs

  • Cheese

  • Cereals

Water

In order to survive (exactly like us humans) birds need water. There are a few ways to leave water out for the birds, for example having a bird bath and a large shallow dish.

Hygiene

Every year, birds die of diseases caused by transmission problems. To avoid this, you should wash your bird feeder, bird baths and plastic dishes every week. You can also relocate your bird feeders too as this also reduces the risk of disease.

And there you have it! Easy right? Let’s look after our gardens and the wildlife this winter.
